National Food Security Mission (NFSM) was launched in October 2007 by National Development Council (NDC).

The mission started with production of Rice, wheat & pulses, met an overwhelming success. Therefore, the mission was continued to 12th five-year plan and coarse cereals and commercial crops were added to the list.

Objective

  • Promotion & extension of upgraded technology for both increasing production and resource conservation.
  • To increase production of rice, wheat, cereals, coarse crops and commercial crops.
  •    To increase area of farming for such crops.
  •   To re-establish soil fertility and productivity at individual farm level.
  • To reduce dependence on import of edible oils by increasing production of vegetable oil.

Features

  • A Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS)
  • In 2018- 2019 & 2019- 2020, National Mission on Oilseeds and Oil palm (NMOOP) & Seed Village Programme were added to the list of NFSM, making it a total of 8 components.
  • 8 components of NFSM are:

1.  NFSM- Rice

2.  NFSM- Wheat

3.  NFSM- pulses

4.  NFSM- Coarse Cereals (Maize, Barley)

5.  NFSM- Sub mission on Nutri cereals

6.  NFSM- Commercial crops

7.  NFSM- Oilseeds and Oil palm

8.  NFSM- Seed Village Programme

  • The states covered under each components are

o  Rice- 25 States

o  Wheat- 11 states

o  Pulses- 29 States

o  Oilseed- 26 sates

o  Nutria cereals- 14 states

Drawbacks

  • There are cases of corruption in the system as good quality food grains are diverted to open market and the low-quality grains are distributed among the poor population
  • This also leads to their nutritional requirement and health being compromised
  • The mission does not cover vegetables and fruits, and since the purchasing power is low among poor people, nutritional requirement still remains incomplete
  • Wastage of food grains due to lack of infrastructure such as cold chain management.
